Amazon.com Review
Philip Van Munching sounds like a pretty cool dad. True, he’d rather his daughters steer clear of drugs and alcohol and avoid having sex until after he’s dead, but he’s well aware of the fact that they’re living in the real world. In Boys Will Put You on a Pedestal (so they can look up your skirt), this father of two offers practical advice to teenage girls in a series of fresh and funny chapters on everything from Fate to Faith to Boyfriends, The Internet, and How to be Happy. Consider what he has to say about Tattoos: "If you ever seriously think about getting one do yourself a favor first. Go to the drawer where you keep your T-shirts and take a good look at them. What’s on them? Got any designer names or funny sayings? Or do you have T-shirts with pictures of cartoon animals? Wait, of course you don’t: you had the animal T-shirts a few years ago, but you’ve gotten rid of them. You outgrew them." To further prove his point, he suggests checking out "your folks’ old high school yearbooks" for more evidence that what’s cool today won’t be forever. One thing his girls can likely count on to remain constant, however, is their dad’s obvious love and respect for them, as Van Munching appears infinitely curious about their current lives and the challenges they will face in the future. –Patrick Jennings.

From Publishers Weekly
Weaving together humorous anecdotes and sound advice, devoted dad Van Munching, whom Couric calls "my personal Dr. Phil," shares a lifetime of wisdom for parents and their growing daughters in this brief book. The author draws on his experiences both as a kid and as a parent, and writes in a conversational style that is bound to make discussions of touchy subjects easier (and even entertaining). The father of two girls, Van Munching offers advice about boyfriends, sex, self-image and dealing with the emotional roller coaster ride of adolescence. The chapters about grief and drugs and alcohol are especially notable, but the book's most important point may be that all good advice comes through shared conversation rather than one-way lecturing. While the book is geared toward daughters, the content is just as applicable to sons, and readers of all ages will find it a useful tool for opening discussions about life's difficult issues. A realistic and humorous view of the teenage mind of girls and boys and their relationships with each other, family and those around them. Philip Van Munching deals with topics that all teenage girls struggle with, such as self-esteem, beauty, boyfriends, sex (chapter 5 is the best, but 5a is even better!), the Internet, grief, faith and the forever goal of how to be happy. As a mother of a preteen girl a few years ago, I found this book very enjoyable, and helpful in remembering what my daughter would be going through all too soon. I passed my copy around to the parents of my daughter's friends and bought several extra copies for the teens to have. Everyone enjoyed the book! The high school gym teacher wanted it to be required reading for every girl in the school! Quick read, and lots of laughs amid some serious topics.
I heard of this book from a blog. The author is two girls' father and this book is for his daughters. There are many serious problems, which will or are faced by teenagers and which may cause harm to them if not subtly dealt with, discussed in this book. What's more, it's fun to hear the author joking while talking about his experiences and understandings instead of attemping to persuade you. It's like show you the truth and you understand it by yourself. You can feel his love to his girls and wife in this book. You can also learn how to treat different unexpected experiences with wisdom and kindness. I will recommend this to any teenage girl and also the ones who have got unsolved problems in their early days. Love it!
Good gift
The book would be worth the purchase price, just so that you could tell all your friends the title. But it is a great book from a father to his daughters. I gave this to my daughter as a gift for the first day of high school. She read it in two days and has since shared it with several of her friends. It talks to a young girl from a man's point of view, albeit a dad's point of view. My daughter says it made her think in a whole new way about those "hot" guys in her new school. I say, "Hallelujah!!"Definitely worthy of your attention.
This is such a great book. I give this as a baby gift to everyone that is having a girl. Even my husband loved this book.
Got this book for my daughter. I read read it in 1 day before I gave it to her. I highly recommend this book.
Great book!
This a great book. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and read this because I wanted to be prepared to give her good practical advise when she gets older. The author expresses his feelings and thoughts very well. It reads like a casual conversation. I would recommend this book to either parent and their daughters. It's very well done.
