This is a eye-opening and life-changing book for anyone that works in or is affected by IT technology. It is a quagmire right now and it seems hopeless until the author explains elegantly and with concrete examples why costs are rising and what can (and should) to reverse the trend. The author's next planned book focused on data-centric application development is surely one that I will buy and read as soon as it is available. Even with this book, the author provides plenty of specific ways to get out of the quagmire. Once you understand why something is broken, you are more than half way to doing something to fix the situation.By the way, the concept of being data-centric instead of application-centric is not new, however this author argues for holistic approach that leverages several other key techniques such as agile, lean and more appropriate framework to view IT from than tradition approaches which when together will be a real game-changer.It is not a question of IF what the author describes will happen, and it is only a matter of time that it becomes the predominate approach and on which side you will be standing when it happens. The current approaches to IT development are unsustainable and those that are able to get out of the quagmire (or never get in) will be more successful than those that do not learn and continue to spend vast sums on IT and get less value from the investment. One more thing, the book has lots of interesting examples and quotes that really drive the message home, and below is one that points out the built-in resistance to change from the whole IT industry."It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it" Upton SinclairRead this book
The author expertly lays out the current data landscape as managed across applications and repositories within organizations. He lays out how we got here and what behaviors we exhibit that continue to add to the problem. Changing our practices is absolutely required if we're going to deliver software and solutions that improve the current situation. This books provides developers, architects, modelers, IT, and sales engineers the gauges to measure whether you're part of the solution or part of the problem.Technology alone isn't the solution or the problem and Dave skillfully weaves in the people aspects and change management considerations to provide us glimpses at paths out of the burden of complexity we've created and continue to create for ourselves.I don't know Dave and get nothing for plugging this other than the satisfaction I've shared some excellent info that may be very helpful and useful to others. I just stumbled upon him and this book a couple of weeks ago via twitter. I work in software and this now on my required leading list for any direct reports.
This book is a must read for business leaders who struggle with unmanageable application systems environments. (That’s just about all business leaders). Whether it’s implementation projects, system conversions, or upgrades, the current state of enterprise applications is a mess and it's getting worse. McComb makes a case that the high cost of application maintenance, runaway implementation projects and labor-intensive data conversions (all things that we now consider the norm) are both unnecessary and unsustainable. Especially compelling is how McComb shows that solutions that have been introduced over the years, including ERP systems and the Cloud, have not helped. The final chapter outlines steps that can be taken now to untangle the problem and also whets the appetite for a promised companion book detailing a data-centric approach to Enterprise applications.
This is a "must read" for leaders at all levels of organizations. The customer side of IT has to understand what drives complexity, cost and time spent on IT projects. This complexity is the most dominant driver in the IT business itself. That is what generate profit for one side and huge costs for the other. IT-people try their best but they seem to be blind for the real problem. Dave explains it in detail. Should be an eye-opener for most people.
This is an in-depth and very relevant analysis of the current state of software development. I'm looking forward to the companion book to see how the author addresses the 50-year-old software crisis.
I've been in the IT business for 10+ years - the worst kept secret is how unnecessarily expensive IT/infrastructure is. Software Wasteland articulates that succinctly, while providing a foundation for how to assess if your enterprise is spending too much (or at risk).
I enjoyed the book and agree with much of the content.
In Software Wasteland, David McComb lays out the history of the software mess, that is the industry, as only a person with his experience and gift with words could accomplish. With numbers and colorful stories, based on his own experience and that of others, Dave shows how each generation of software tooling implemented by the usual suspects, has only piled on to more deadlines that are never met, and costs that can be an order of magnitude more than estimated. Yet, somehow the beat goes on. If anything, based on my own knowledge of some of his examples such as DIHMRS, Dave has underestimated the consequences of maintaining the status quo of building on legacy, and what he calls "neo legacy" systems. Fortunately, he does offer hope in the last chapter of this book, and with a teaser into the contents of its companion book, The Data Centric Revolution, which I am looking forward to also reading.
