Picked this up in Union Station, DC before a return to Tampa and found it an interesting way to pass the time. Since I am not going to facing tricky interview questions anytime soon, I thought it would be fun to tackle them as a puzzle and review the mental processes necessary to solve same. Some are nonsensical - How would you weigh your head?, but some are based in solid analytical and mathematical principals. And some are just fun to try to remember such as getting the lions and men across the river. But an entertaining way to pass some time.

Fun brain teasers, but they are outdated. Google doesn't use these anymore, and the companies that still do are clueless and far behind. In addition, a fair number of the brain tease solutions have errors in the audible version. Some of these are fixed in the kindle version. I'm not sure what you'd get in the print copy.It is a bit frustrating that it spends so much time explaining the reasoning behind these answers and is still wrong enough times to make the answers not trustworthy. It was a lot more fun until I started catching the errors - then it was just frustrating. The title feels especially pretentious when taken in context with the errors, and it means you can't really just listen to it or switch using whisper sync.

Nah, too simple questions. If you really want to get a job at any of the best high-tech companies – you will have to solve much more difficult algorithmic riddles as well as write the code and write it fast. I also don’t think that any of the techniques mentioned in this book will help you. Just google interview coding questions on the net, try to solve them and write code that solves them. That’s all you can do. Basically, it’s either you have it or you don’t. This book is not innovative…. – it is based on riddles that you can find on the web and then comes the lengthy explanation but since you already solved the riddle, then you just browse real quick to make sure that the author doesn’t have any innovative stuff that you didn’t think about, and it’s targeted to the lowest common denominator between the potential readers and the intelligence of the author. The only difficult problem was the one where you have to find the closest pair of stars in the sky. All the rest are either very old, or quite easy.

I found this to be an entertaining and informative read about the riddle-type questions that are now so popular in job interviews. Some of the advice offered could give you ideas on how to answer such questions if you are faced with them during an interview. Importantly, it could help you better structure your thought process and demeanor when tackling such interview questions. However, this book alone would probably not help you get a job at Google or anywhere else - riddles or not.The most interesting thing I found in this book is the admission that other companies have adopted riddle questions because they are trying to be more like Google. However, such interviewers usually don't understand the reasoning or objectives behind Google's riddle/mathematical problems and therefore a worthy response to a riddle asked at Google may get you different results at other companies.I had fun comparing my answers to the riddles to the answer key in the back of the book, but I believe that it has only made me marginally better as an interviewer. I still think that getting hit with a riddle during an interview at any company makes your success more of a crap shoot.

First of all, William Poundstone is a very good writer, and a bright guy to boot. This is a good book just to give you the answer to those crazy puzzles you often find not only in interviews, but in puzzle books. It's a pleasure to read and you really learn a lot. A book worth buying no matter what you are trying to find---a job--solutions to puzzles and more.

Love this book, it is extremely fun to read,

A really fun read if you like mind games and tricky puzzles.

I believe is a very good one to read. I am not sure if I can pass these questions during interviews, but good to know now. Recommended by Amazon. Done reading in Nov 2014. Ninos Youkhana nninoss.com

I teach a capstone course for our majors and one of the things we do is try to address their interviewing skills. Having these examples for them to use for practice interviews etc. is extremely valuable. Plus it's a good read. Well worth it.
