Verification, Validation, and Testing of Engineered Systems

From the Back Cover

A comprehensive collection of VVT activities and methods for system-wide implementation Verification, Validation, and Testing (VVT) is of extreme importance to systems engineering, where up to 60 percent of systems development cost is expended on VVT activities or correcting system defects. Verification, Validation, and Testing of Engineered Systems is the first resource to explain this process in a comprehensive, implementable manner. Through a practical approach, the text presents VVT activities performable throughout a system's lifetime, from system definition and design to system use and disposal. Beginning with a thorough explanation of the role of VVT in the process of engineered systems, the book provides a much-needed quantitative, credible model that answers the key questions of what, how, and when one should test, as well as when to stop testing. It equips both new and experienced readers with statistical and fuzzy logic paradigms for quantitative VVT cost, time, and risk models to minimize uncertainties and risks in systems development. Explains the essence of systems' VVT and the linkage between VVT and systems development, manufacturing, use/maintenance and retirement Includes systems' development and post-development VVT activities, as well as non-testing and testing systems' methods for engineered systems Reveals how to acquire quality data and optimize the VVT strategy in the face of limitations and in accordance with different business objectives Describes the methodology used to validate the quality model along with examples outlining a system's quality improvements Presents actual quality data related to engineered systems as measured in various industries Verification, Validation, and Testing of Engineered Systems aids systems and test engineers as well as first- and second-line managers working in systems development and manufacturing industries, civilian agencies, or the military. It can be used as a textbook in graduate-level courses in systems, electrical, aerospace, mechanical, and industrial engineering.

I hate to be the person to break this book's 5-star rating, but here's the main gripe I have with this book (and with many books written by a single author*): it's almost like 8 papers (8 chapters) put together into one book. There's so much material involved that it's almost overwhelming and impossible to absorb in one sitting. I like that the author is very detailed, but that is the book's downfall. It's too much detail. The preface itself addresses this by saying that this book may be used as a supplemental textbook for a graduate course, but that its intended audience is those who practice systems engineering.Maybe once I'm done with the course I can revisit this review and upgrade it to a 4 or 5 star rating, but right now a 3 seems appropriate given how dense the material is.*From experience, many textbooks written by one author rarely take into account the audience their books are intended for. As such, many of these books require years of experience to understand or a very skillful person to break it down for others. That is why this book gets 3 stars: it joins the club.

An excellent reference for V&V engineers or anyone starting up a V&V program. Well written and very detailed explanations for each step in the process.

Arrived on time and as advertised.

This book provides the best reference for verification, validation, and testing that exists today. It is both complete and clear, covering every possible activity and method for VVT. The work is a result of contribution and review from many people in many industries, modified by actual test cases to use the activities and methods, and further assembled by the author into a highly usable reference format.Prior to this book, I searched unsuccessfully for a suitable textbook for a course in Principles of Test and Evaluation. The best prior book available was so short as to be merely a summary. Dr. Engel has far surpassed that prior work, providing a work with sufficient detail to support every phase of system testing. After a short summary, the book provides an extensive chapter on VVT activities that describes and gives instruction on each possible activity that might be useful during a system development and operation. The explicit wisdom is that VVT activities start at the outset of the system development, with evaluation of the development bounds, and continue through development, operation, maintenance and disposal as a constant check on the system quality. Typical activities include (a) Generating a Requirements Verification Matrix, (b) Assessing System Safety Plan, (c) Optimizing the VVT Strategy, (d) Developing a Systems Integration Laboratory, (e) Performing Integration Tests, (f) Conducting Test Readiness Review, (g) Perform Ongoing Testing, a sampling of over 60 useful activities presented. The book then provides cross-cutting VVT methods that may be used in many activities, such as Requirements Verification, Design of Experiments, Model-based Testing, Group Evaluation, Interface Testing, Usability Testing, and many more, another 47 useful guidelines. Finally, the book discusses at length the methods to model and optimize the system VVT process to ensure the best use of resources. It includes specific information on how to obtain the data needed for modeling, and highlights the author's software tool for VVT modeling. You cannot go wrong in buying this book as your reference for test.

This book deserves a place in every systems engineering library. If the work to realize an engineered system is divided into three streams, management, development and Verification, Validation and Testing (VVT), this book provides comprehensive understandable coverage of the activities performed in the testing stream throughout a system's lifecycle, from concept definition to disposal. In each phase of the system lifecycle the book not only describes what the VVT stream of activities do, but also provides example of how the work is done as well as outline templates of the enabling products produced in that phase of the system lifecycle. The book shows how tools, reliability, maintainability, costs, risk management, models and simulations, software and hardware testing, quality and other topics are integrated into the development and VVT activities to realize the engineered system. The book is written in clear language. The experience of the author which can be intuited from the text is supported with many citations to the literature (books, journals and conference proceedings) and suggestions for further reading. Many of the citations are state of the art, namely citations to current and recent literature. The book also contains anecdotes of projects and the lessons that can be learnt from their successes and failures.Bottom line: this book deserves a place in every systems engineering library. Experienced practitioners will find it useful for refreshing their memory, while beginners will find it a useful introduction to many concepts.
