It doesn't take rocket science to know that our country is coming apart, economically, culturally and politically. Isabel Sawbill, one of our nation's long-time leading economists and budget experts, has written a remarkably clear and clear-headed agenda for stitching our country back together. It is rooted primarily in work -- assisting people to train for it, to induce them to engage in work (not just for the money but because of its psychic necessity), and to use tax revenues from work (the payroll tax) to both fix and strengthen the social safety net to adapt to major changes in the American economy since Social Security and Medicare were first introduced. If there is a sensible middle remaining in this country, this is or should be their Bible. The job of our political leaders is to convince voters that this sensible set of reforms tied to work to strengthen this middle, upon which our social and political depends, is in the national interest. Politicians who want this future for our country must read this book, and so should citizens who want leaders to lead the way to a better future.
An interesting, well written defense of a part of the American population that seldom draws our attention.
The author has some interesting ideas, but it seems to me that they are nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Worse, however, is that her definition of "the forgotten American" is inadequate in the extreme. The REAL forgotten American is the middle class person who pays the taxes that support all those government programs. Like it or not, they are they ones that elected Trump in reaction to the costs of the government's social programs. Unpleasant though it may be, the middle class is fed up paying for someone else's handouts.
Isabel Sawhill has written a seminal book in recognizing and addressing the realities of a huge segment of our populations that has contributed to the upheaval of our democracy today. She presents cogent and practical policies that could address the dilemma and provide some solutions. This is a must read for every legislator in the country.
ms. ( I can't believe she has a phd) sawhill has the analytical prowess of an advanced high school student, the logic of know it all 5th grader and the mind set of a soviet thug. There is literally not one sentence that is both true and coherent.
