Almost too clever and poignant, Amulet is, on the surface, about navigating the murky waters of adolescence and, beneath that, an exploration of abandonment and survival. Emily and Navin are lost children, literally lost in a dark, new world and struggling to save their mother, who has been kidnapped by a drooling, tentacled beast. With stellar artwork, imaginative character design, moody color and consistent pacing, this first volume's weakness lies in its largely disjointed storytelling. There is the strong, young, heroine; cute, furry, sidekicks; scary monsters—all extraordinary components, but pieced together in a patchwork manner. There is little hope in his dark world as Kibuishi removes Emily and Navin's frame of safety. Their hopes rest in a magic amulet that seems to be working in the interest of the children—until it suddenly isn't. The most frightening element of Amulet is the sense of insecurity we feel for Emily, fighting her way through uncharted terrain with no guide and no support system. This first volume of Amulet isn't a disappointment, but it does feel like a warmup to the main event. First thought You killed someone in the first few pages of a kids book! Wait Disney movies kill people off too. Okay, shock over.I likes how the mother helped keep the kids upbeat when the moved into the old home and had to clean it and on the way there she was understanding of their feelings and was encouraging them to like their new home. Even encouraging Emily to learn more about her great grandfather. Just not be like him.Emily was super brave for a kid who watched her father die and her mother get snatched by a monster. She took responsibility of her brother and the amulet and decided to help save her mother and the world that they were in. I liked the Emily has choices not just that she has to do something because she was given the amulet but she had the choice to. She also had the choice to seriously hurt someone but she made the choice to let him live even though he wasn't the nicest of beings. I like that she lets her younger brother help out and notices when he might be better suited for the situation because of his past favorite past time ( like my son, most kids and some adults...its gaming)The story was great. A little dark but you get the whole light at the end of the tunnel feeling. That the characters will achieve what the set out to do. I also enjoyed the whole family thing. The illustrations were wonderful. I even slowed down and went back to look at the artwork. I look forward to reading this series and being able to talk about it with my son. It was a great start to a fantastical adventure.Now that I think about it I'd recommend this to kids around middle grade but like I said my son has been reading the series for awhile so, maybe use caution it does have monsters and evil doers and its a little dark but not so much that I wouldn't say you shouldn't read this with a younger kid. I'm actually thinking about starting it with my youngest soon.Great characters, Wonderful story and artwork, a quick read ( at least for me, an adult), fantastical adventure. I'll continue to recommend it to others and look forward to reading it with my youngest and continuing the series.
This was my first time reading a graphic novel and it was interesting! In fact, it wasn't until recently that I thought I would ever read a graphic novel! I thank my students from last year for finding, loving, and reading the Amulet series so much, because here I am enjoying it now!Amulet: The Stonekeeper, is the heart breaking story of Emily and Navin. They've just suffered a tremendous loss when they move to a new city and end up, for the moment, losing someone else they love. We see them battle the unknown to find what they desire so badly; we see them grow up.It took me around 20 minutes to read this book, there are many pages with just pictures and no text, but I enjoyed it. I have to admit, though, it was a struggle to read this book how it's supposed to be read. Since I don't have much experience with graphic novels, I found myself having to re-read.Now to put on my teacher hat!This book would be a great way to teach craft in the class. The author has crafted their story into a graphic novel using dialogue and illustrations. The author also created a certain tone and mood while writing. This book was an enjoyable read; I will be reading the next one!

An excellent start to w wonderful graphic novel series. The artwork is beautiful and the story is engaging. Readers in my high school classes who have not found a book to love often find that this series sparks the reading fire! Every one of them who has read this titles has gone on to finish the series.
My eight year old now loves reading thanks to these books. So I have bought every single title by this author. I have struggled with getting him to love reading, with so many other distractions competing for his attention, books just don’t seem to hold the allure that they did for me 25 years ago. But thankfully I stumbled across the Amulet series. And I have since bought every book he’s written. My son is now going through a book a day. These books are amazing.
Although I wasn't expecting to love this graphic novel, that's exactly what I did. The book starts on a tragic note with a dramatic car accident and death of Emily's father. Years later Emily's mother moves Emily and her younger brother Navin to an old family home which is filled with secrets none of them expected. When their mother is abducted by a strange tentacled creature in the basement, Emily--armed with the aid of a disembodied voice coming from an amulet she found--and Navin follow the creature into a strange world where they hope to rescue their mother.The story is your typical fantasy hero quest with a few shakes of steampunk. The illustrations were a pleasant blend of East and West, almost like anime with soft edges. And the coloring was arresting. The mood of the scene was perfectly set with the colors. For instance, in the beginning when the accident occurred, deep blues and greys dominated which offered a very stark, cold mood. Then when the family is making their move to the new home, the colors were more autumnal and warm which offered a strange sense of hope mixed with nostalgia.Not only is the artwork beautiful, but it's creative. Some of the creatures were truly creepy and others were downright adorable. A couple of the characters felt stiff, such as the children's mother and their great-uncle Silas; a couple characters had clearly delineated personalities, such as Misket and Cogsley; and the two primary characters, Emily and Navin, drifted somewhere in the middle. Overall, I'm willing to forgive the inconsistent character development because it is the first volume in a series and it excelled in other areas.One problem I come across more often than not in graphic novels is poor editing--inconsistent picture panels, poor grammar, etc.--but I didn't encounter those problems with The Stonekeeper. The writing was well done, the characters and story were creative, and the artistry is excellent. It all came together for one cohesive graphic novel.
