About the Author
Kevin J. McNamara followed the path taken by the Czecho-Slovak Legion shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union, traveling almost 2,000 miles along the Trans-Siberian Railway. He was subsequently awarded research grants by the Earhart and Tawani Foundations to acquire and translate from Czech to English first-hand accounts by the men who had served in the legion, which were published in Prague in the 1920s but were suppressed following the Nazi and Soviet conquests of Czecho-Slovakia.A former journalist for Calkins Media Inc., and a former aide to the late U.S. Congressman R. Lawrence Coughlin, McNamara is an Associate Scholar of the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, PA and a former contributing editor to its quarterly journal, Orbis: A Journal of World Affairs. He earned a B.A. in journalism and M.A. in international politics from Temple University, where he was a student of the noted military historian, Russell F. Weigley. He lives in Glenside, PA. This is a fascinating story about events during World War I that led to the foundation of the nation of Czechoslovakia. Using primary sources and a wide range of other scholarship, the author has told the story of a legion of Czech and Slovak soldiers who were caught in the crumbling Russian empire and had to fight their way to safety, which was rescue by Allied ships in Vladivostok. Along the way, they fought off continual attacks by Bolshevik armies. Apparently, there was an effort to hide this story on the part of the Russians and others, but here it is, told in a thorough and engrossing fashion by the author. This is a must-read for European history buffs.
This is an excellent book about one of the most fascinating episodes in 20th century history: the travails of the Czech Legion in Russia.The backstory is rather complicated, but ultimately it reminded me more than anything of Xenophon's Anabasis--a small, disciplined army far from home forced to hack its way through the wrack and ruin of a disintegrating empire to reach safety. While I've long been familiar with the general story about the Czech legion, this author does a great job of pulling together accounts from letters, diaries, etc. to paint a first-hand picture of what it was like. It is difficult to imagine the extremely complicated situation that the Czechs found themselves in, in the chaos of 1918 Siberia, where Reds, Whites, Americans, French, Japanese, German and Hungarian POWs all fought for control over the Trans-Siberian railroad, and the Czechs were constantly subject to threats, false promises, and misplaced hopes as their fortunes shifted with those of the overall progress of WWI. But despite it all, the Czechs came out on top...A large part of the book--probably about a third--deals with various diplomatic machinations regarding Czech independence which this reader found to be fairly tedious, but which certainly represents an important part of the story. It was primarily the success of the Czech Legion which inspired US and European leaders to support Czech independence, and thus the end of the Austro-Hungarian empire, after WWI.
My Dad flew an unaccompanied B-24 for the OSS during WW2, dropping partisans and supplies into Yugoslavia and Czecho-Slovakia. Afterwards, he did his Master's thesis on the causes of WW1. We had a bunch of those heroes coming through our home in the mid-fifties, getting their exit physicals at Mayo Clinic as they retired from the CIA. Dad always said the Czechs were the toughest of the bunch, and that their history was complicated. This book does a very good job of explaining all those things that were too complicated for him to explain to his then ten-year-old son.A terrific story, well organized and well told. It begs to be made into a movie.
The story of the Czech Legion is often relegated to the footnotes of history (if it is even discussed at all). I was pleased that finally the heroic travails of the Czech soldiers who fought across Russia was finally receiving a scholarly examination. However, it seems that McNamara sets his scope a little too wide (or, perhaps, the noble if largely uncelebrated contributions of the Czech Legion warrants a narrower chapter in the history of World War I.)By the early 20th century the Austro-Hungarian Empire was a cumbersome and deeply troubled entity, as its polyglot nature began to fracture and split. Two groups that were dissatisfied were the Cechs and Slovaks - linguistically similar, but culturally and historically separate. As the First World War ground on, increasing numbers of Czechs and Slovaks simply refused to fight (ala The Good Soldier Svejk: and His Fortunes in the World War (Penguin Classics)), many becoming POWs of their Slavic brethren, the Russians. As the Russian Revolution began with its accompanying instability and strife, the father of what would become "Czecho-Slovakia", Tomas Masaryk, saw an opportunity: these former POWs would cross Siberia, sail across the Pacific, cross the Americas, sail across the Atlantic, and return to fight in the Western Front, and in so doing, provide the impetus for a new Czech (and Slovak) nation. Thus were born the Czech Legions.To McNamara's credit, he does a remarkable job of demonstrating the complicated nature of this plan, detailing both the military struggles on the ground as well as the political struggles Masaryk (and his right-hand man, Edvard Benes) faced - to my knowledge, his is the first real historical examination of this event in any detailed manner. However, as with any initial foray into new ground, there are challenges.The greatest challenge I found was the relative lack of detail about the action of the Czech Legion as it fought its was towards the Pacific (and in some instances, fought back westward to ensure the Trans-Siberian railway was clear for straggling or other Czech units). Frankly, it was a little difficult to follow. Further, I had anticipated that this would be the primary focus of the work - instead, McNamara casts his net a little wider, addressing the political maneuvering and the intrigue Masaryk engaged in as he lobbied the leaders of the Allied nations. Lastly, the Czech-centric nature of the leadership (both Masaryk and Benes were Czechs) was an issue that I wish was addressed in greater detail, as it eventually became an internal issue with the fledgling nation.These criticisms aside, it is a tremendously detailed book, and one that introduces many previously unpublished primary sources. McNamara also does the Czech Legions (and Masaryk) credit - perhaps over much - in connecting the efforts of the Legion to not only the death of Czar Nicholas II and his family, but also to the conclusion of the First World War and the role the Soviets played in the early states of the Russian Civil War.
