This isn't a treatise or even a medium-length book by Douglas Wilson. It is a brief perusal of the salient issues that keep Reformers like Doug outside the Roman Communion.Toward the beginning of the book, he challenges the presupposition that the church's promised unity is primarily (or at all) to be a governmental unity. Rather, we are promised the unity of "One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism" -- the mark of believers across all times and places. I found this to be Wilson's most important contribution to the book.His treatment of the remaining issues is well done. You won't find much in the way of strawmen. Instead, he speaks as to his friends, trying to have them take an honest look at themselves (and at their friends on the other side of the Tiber.With Doug Wilson, I look forward to the day when we can say 'Soli Deo Gloria' and 'ad Majorem dei Gloriam' in unison. But with a unity based on truth and not on group-hub ecumenism.
I am a convinced protestant but this book did not convince me. Wilson’s style is sometimes witty and he certainly started out well on p. X of the Introduction by stating that “true catholicity begins with defining catholicity†implying that we need to always distinguish between the use of “catholic†when referring to the universal Christian church and the use of Catholic, capital C, when referring to the Roman Catholic Church. The two are not synonymous.Wilson makes a few valid points. However, there are no endnotes and only 14 footnotes in the entire 186 page book so finding and substantiating his claims is nearly impossible to do. Some of his claims are a bit confusing such as his claim on p. 22 that Christians will persevere to the end because we are the bones of Christ, “we are His bones and so the elect will persevere.â€I don’t think Wilson has contributed much to advancing the truth on this subject. A much better and well documented treatment of this subject is The Roman Catholic Controversy by James R White.
Not an easy read. The Title is catchy, but the writing is something one plows through. Ordered it for my husband (who is very educated) and he thought the writing was thick, not substantial thick, but obtuse.
Just a repeat of the usual misinformation about Catholicism. I was a Protestant and am now a happy Catholic. I used to believe the straw man arguments until I actually read what the Catholic Church really believes. I found my Bible is a Catholic book. Visit [...] for the truth.
