Ordered this book after hearing the author at a conference. Wonderful book. Great for child with special needs, those without and adults to better understand our special kids! We all have a whale!
This book about a little boy who is new at school and needs his whale is a wonderful book. Children love and can relate to the story. The pictures are fantastic (children notice things I did not). I especially like the way he portrays the principal--as an advocate for a child. As a principal, you don't see that much in any book or media! Overall, a great book our school loves and will love for years to come.
This is a great book to use to teach kids about differences or to make the point to teachers that sometimes using a student's interests can really make the difference! Paula Kluth has written several great books for teachers; it's nice that she is sharing her thoughts with kids too. Also included are some useful ideas at the end as to how you can use the book with your classroom!
Cute story for my daycare.
I use this book in my university class when teaching undergraduate students sensitivity and ways to have a positive educational influence on the schooling of young children with autism spectrum disorders. The author demonstrates to teachers how to use a child's interest in a positive way.
I am honored to have read this book and met one of the authors, Patrick Schwarz! What a fantastic description of what it is like for a child who has autism as an attribute :). I love how you can take one thing our kids are interested in and turn it into a learning experience. I loved Pedro's Whale!
I work with teachers and as part of a book study I was co-facilitating I read this book out loud to the group while projecting the pictures. It's hard to engage 20 teachers after school but the room was quiet. I love this book and can't wait to share it with adults again!
Every classroom should have this book. Reading this book to students and discussing would be very helpful towards developing understanding and appreciation for the fascinations of children with autism. I love that the children and adults in this book help Pedro to develop understanding about what he's learning through his love of whales. The illustrations are beautiful and communicate so well the endearing nature of children.
