How can we develop "habits of the heart" cherish community and nourish the struggle for justice? One way is by practicing the communion of saints. However, not only has devotion to the saints suffered an extraordinary decline wherever Western secular culture has gained a foothold, but, surprisingly, the communion of saints is one of the least developed symbols in all theology. This dearth of a well-developed, integrated approach in theology contrasts with the lively interest in saints in other disciplines such as social history and psychology. In Friends of God and Prophets, Elizabeth Johnson provides such a theology of the communion of saints, utilizing, ironically, women's practices of memory -- "ironically" because the official list of saints is largely dominated by men, and "women's history of holiness has been neither remembered nor truthfully told". In the first part of the book, Johnson dialogues with history, gleaning clues from the past for an understanding of the communion of saints that is both faithful to tradition and promising of liberation. In the second, she.offers a systematic interpretation of the symbol, connecting insights from history with insights arising from women's practices today, linking both with radical hope in God. In this way, the communion of saints can become a practical doctrine for the entire church: a source of strength in the work to create a transformed society of mutuality and compassionate respect, both among human beings and between human beings and the Earth.

If you are a person into change, into contemplating your own place in the world, into deepening your personal spiritual connection to all that is, and especially to G-d, you will love this book. Yes, it deals with feminist theology, yes, 'Sr. Beth' is an excellent, careful, and clear writer -- these are obvious with a cursory glance. We all fit together, somehow, in this world of G-d's, and hardly a paragraph goes by where the reader is not encouraged to feel & believe in both the connection & the process. This work is a synthesis of very much, a disparager of very little, an emblem of hope & belief... a way... for how we are all part of the communion of saints, keepers of Wisdom, able ourselves to -be- 'friends of God, and prophets' -- and ultimately able to believe in and offer support to each other. It is simply one of the best books I have ever read. This is not to say it's an easy read -- it is not. It is FULL of stuff, no wasted words. But, if you are a seeker of the Holy Spirit, you will be encouraged & nurtured -- and maybe, challenged.
Elizabeth Johnson is one of the best known theologians in the US, and this book demonstrates the depth of her thinking on a topic that has received very little attention. She is skilled in linking past centuries of thinking about the communion of saints, death and the afterlife with critical questions that postmoderns are likely to ask. I will be using her book with a study group. We have used several of her books previously with great success.
This is a good read. It makes you think. She has a lot of good points. In general I am not thrilled about every argument she makes, but I always get something out of what she is saying.
I bought this book at the recommendation of a friend. I was eager to get it because I have read almost every book that Elizabeth Johnson has written, so I knew it would be good. I was not disappointed.
This author is great. I'm still reading this book, and will continue - there's a lot to think about here.
Dr. Johnson presents does two things rather well in this book: first, she provides an overview of the history of what it means to be a saint within the Christianity, though focusing mostly on the Roman Catholic Church; second, she also discusses why the idea of saints as those who have already dies are an important part of one’s faith story. My interest in the first part ebbed and flowed as this part was focused on issues within Catholicism. It was interesting but not relevant; though I would say for those, who are members of Roman Catholicism their interest might be greater. The second part however, was much more fruitful for me as it examined the relevance of the Communion of saints for all Christians. This does not mean that I would have skipped the first part as I feel that this first part set up the second part.
Johnson does an outstanding job presenting a commonly overlooked aspect of our faith as a Christian community. A personal interest of mine, The Communion of Saints is a subject that I have done significant research on. I believe that Johnson brings this essential element of the Apostles Creed into the Twenty-First Century in a wonderfully illuminating way.As I mentioned in a recent lecture I gave on the Communion of Saints, while Johnson's subheading "A Feminist Theological Reading of The Communion of Saints" may seem frightening and off-putting to some who associate the term "Feminist" with the early women's social-political movements of the 60s and 70s, one should not fear.Johnson, arguably the leading North American Feminist Theologian, moves the reader through the history of the Communion of Saints into a paradigm for the post-modern age that leaves the so-called "first-wave feminism" in the dust to elucidate the meaning of living and praying as part of a community that extends far beyond our immediate world. The call to "radical inclusiveness" is a theme that is presented in manner that applies a tenet of Apostolic tradition to the modern (and not-so-modern) call to social action. This book presents the history of the Communion of Saints and then answers the question: "So What?"While some of the book is heavy with theological subjects, I still recommend this book to anyone who is looking to grow in their understanding of The Communion of Saints, our relationship within that community and/or the state of inclusive theology today. This is a book for the person with a terminal degree and for the person without. It is an excellent work!
